Beware These Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair!

vent-low-on-wallWhen you live in a climate like ours, one that changes drastically from one season to the next, then it’s nice to know that you can enjoy the comfort brought to you by a year-round heat pump system. Whether it’s one of the coldest days of the year or the hottest, you can rest assured that your heat pump will keep you comfortable—that is, until it stops keeping you comfortable.

Let’s face it, nobody likes waking up to a cold house in the middle of winter, and realizing that while their heat pump is supposed to be warming their home, it seems to have stopped working or stopped working as well as it should.

There’s no HVAC system on the market that escapes the need for repairs, though keeping up on your biannual maintenance needs certainly can help with this. What’s important is to know when your heat pump is showing signs that it even needs repair. What are these signs?

Strange Sounds

Heat pumps are known for operating relatively silently. So, if you start hearing strange or loud noises when it functions, such as rattling, screeching, or hissing, you should take it as a sign that there’s a problem.

Generally speaking, anything outside of the normal whoosh of temperature-controlled air coming in through your vents, or the gentle rattling of your ductwork as air goes through them, should be cause for alarm.

Odd Smells

Strange odors coming from an HVAC system is definitely never something to ignore. If you haven’t had your heat pump maintained before the heating season started, it’s possible you’ll detect a faint burning odor as dust burns off of the jets and interior components of your system. What’s not normal is for this smell to persist for more than a few days.

Plus, if the smell is acrid, it may be a sign that electrical components are wearing down and parts of your heat pump system are overheating. The best thing you can do if this is the case is give our team a call!

Uneven Heating

Unless you’ve specifically set one or more of your air handlers to stay off or create less warm temperatures—in the case of a ductless heat pump system—you shouldn’t feel uneven heating (or cooling, depending on the season).

If you do feel uneven temperatures throughout the house and there’s nothing else to blame—for instance, a room with a south-facing window is going to feel warmer than the other rooms of the house—then it’s time to give us a call for potential heat pump repairs.
