How Does a Ductless Mini-Split AC Work?

It can seem counter-intuitive to have an air conditioning system that doesn’t need ductwork, but that’s exactly what a ductless mini-split air conditioner is. The system isn’t wildly different from a traditional split system AC – in fact, the outdoor unit of a ductless system is almost the same as one from a traditional split system AC. You may be wondering how this system can effectively deliver whole home cooling without ductwork, so here is an overview from the air conditioning experts at DB Heating & Cooling.

The Components

There are three main components that comprise a ductless air conditioning system:

  • The outdoor unit – the outdoor unit contains the compressor and condenser for the system
  • The indoor blowers – the indoor blowers of a ductless system are about three feet long and mount flush to walls or ceilings. Each blower operates individually and each contains its own small set of coils, an air filter and its own refrigerant line.
  • The conduits – every indoor blower has to connect to the outdoor unit in order to provide cool air to your home, and does so via a conduit drilled into an exterior wall. The conduit is small, about 3” in diameter, and contains the refrigerant line, a power cord and a condensate drain line.

Cooling Your Home

Every outdoor unit can support up to four indoor blowers. Because each blower works independently, you can cool only the areas of your home that need it. The cooling process is simple: just turn on one of the blowers and the process starts.
