Indoor Air and Your AC System: What You Should Know

air-conditioning-ventYour air conditioner can be both the cause of and the victim of poor indoor air quality, but it doesn’t have to be either!

You probably do your best to keep dirt and debris out of your living space—dusting fairly regularly, doing your dishes and laundry, making the beds, etc. But do you do anything to clean your air conditioner?

Chances are, your answer to this is “no” and we wouldn’t expect it to be anything different if you’ve never heard of the great indoor air quality products and services you could invest it, or professional Bergen County, NJ AC services that can help. Here’s what you should know:

Debris Can Get in Your Indoor Air Unit

The indoor components of your cooling system include a refrigerant line running through it as well as an indoor blower fan that sucks in warm air from your household. As this air gets sucked in, so too does dust and debris. The good news is, your air filter is there to stop that dust and debris!

That is, if it’s not too clogged up.

The reason we tell you to change your air filter is exactly for this reason, so it doesn’t get too clogged up. A dirty and clogged air filter can prevent air from moving over the indoor coil, and allow debris to pummel those interior components of your air conditioner.

As a result, your air conditioning system won’t work as it should, you won’t feel comfortable (your indoor air quality will suffer!) and your air conditioner can start accumulating wear and tear faster than it otherwise would. A clogged up air filter prevents air from moving through your system like it should, so you should be sure to change that air filter every 1-3 months.

Wait, there’s more!

That air filter is not enough to protect your indoor air quality! As we just explained, the air filter protects your cooling system itself. For indoor air protection, you need a whole-house air filtration or air purification system. You might even benefit from a UV air purifier, which is installed right in your ductwork to eliminate bacteria such as mold, before it even has a chance to infiltrate your indoor air.

Debris Can Live in Your Ductwork

We just mentioned a UV air purifier—this is a great system for preventing a particular type of unhealthy debris from damaging your indoor air, but that’s not all that can reside inside your air ducts.

Your ductwork, without the right products and services in place, can fill up with dust and other allergens, which you and your family can breathe in and become ill from. Dirty ductwork also slows down airflow, making your air conditioner work less efficiently.

Regular duct cleaning services, once every few years or so, will help mitigate this.

There are a number of products and services available to help your air conditioner perform better and help your family breathe easier. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you might have.
