Signs of Impending AC Repair Needs

checklist-with-red-markerGetting professional repairs done for your air conditioner when it needs it is one of those services you don’t want to put off. Delaying AC repairs can leave you with a completely broken down machine, and no way to stay comfortable throughout the rest of our long and hot summer.

We encourage our customers to take care of their systems as soon as they realize they need a repair. But, how do you know when it’s time for air conditioning repairs?

Luckily for you, we shared some signs below that it is, in fact, time to call for repairs, or at least to have your air conditioner inspected by a professional to see what’s going on.

Your Cooling System Just Can’t Keep You Cool

You might think that this is a pretty obvious indicator of AC problems, but you may also be surprised at how long homeowners will sometimes wait to detail this type of problem, believing that “it’s not that bad.” It also doesn’t help that a problem like this tends to happen at the height of summer, when it’s the hottest.

Temperatures may spike, leading you to believe that your air conditioning system is struggling with the high temperatures. But this isn’t always the case–while your air conditioner does have some limits, it should be able to effectively cool down your home on a moderately hot day.

Your Utility Bills Are Really High

Take a look at your monthly energy bills. Are they considerably higher than they were at this same time last year? How about in comparison to what your neighbors are paying? If your energy bills seem to be too high, it’s a sign that something in your home isn’t working as efficiently as it once did, and your air conditioner can certainly be to blame.

After all, our HVAC systems account for about half of all the energy use in a home, so if something is amiss with one of them, it’s going to reflect here.

The System Is Cycling On and Off Rapidly

This process is known as short-cycling, and is both the symptom of a problem and the cause of further problems.

What happens is the air conditioner turns on, the compressor runs for a very brief time, then the system cycles back off before it ever completes a full cooling cycle. But then, it turns right back on again! This whole time, the system never actually cools down your home as effectively as it’s meant to, because it doesn’t run long enough to do so.

You Hear Odd Noises from the Equipment

There’s no such thing as a completely silent air conditioner. There are, however, sounds that can come up that mean something is amiss, and those sounds shouldn’t be ignored. These can include clanging, banging, hissing, excessive rattling, and even screeching.

if you hear any of these noises or notice any of the above-mentioned sounds, please give us a call!
