But how do you know if your AC system needs to be replaced to begin with? With not much time left before we start seeing warmer temperatures again, now is the time to think about the condition of your cooling system and determine if it’s ready to get you through one more season, or if now is the time to invest in a Wyckoff, NJ air conditioning replacement.

There are a number of signs and indications you can watch out for that your air conditioner needs to be replaced, which we’ve covered below.

Increased Energy Bills

Aging cooling systems have to deal with more years of wear and tear than more modern systems, naturally. This causes a decrease in efficiency, and as your system loses more and more of its cooling ability due to the simple passage of time, it will begin to operate for longer in order to compensate.

Soon, you’ll see your energy bills rising despite comparable use to last year. If you notice your monthly bills going up for no reason, it can certainly mean that your AC system is getting close to the end of its lifecycle.

Frequent Repairs

It’s natural that over its lifespan, even a newer cooling system will need repairs. However, as your air conditioner ages, the various components that make it up wear down enough that they begin to fail in groups. Therefore, the frequency and cost of repairs will spike.

If you find yourself having your air conditioner repaired more than once every couple of years, or if your next repair is going to cost half of what a new system is worth, then it’s a good idea to have the system replaced. Of course, you can keep investing in repairs, but eventually you’ll get to the point that you are just replacing your system one piece at a time anyway. To ensure efficiency and optimal functionality, it’s best to just replace the entire system at once.

Age

As we discussed above, aging air conditioner will have more problems. But how do you know if your cooling system is too old? The general rule of thumb is that a well-maintained air conditioner will last about 10-15 years. Of course, this varies on each system’s individual situation, and care. But typically, once an AC system gets older than this, it will begin to accumulate problems such as those we mentioned above.

Essentially, your cooling system will become less and less cost-effective to keep up and running. You’re welcome to continue paying to maintain an older AC system, of course, but we don’t advise that—it’s more economical to replace the system. Our professional HVAC technicians are happen to inspect your system and give you the information to make an educated decision about whether you can get by with another repair, or if you really should consider system replacement.

At DB Heating & Cooling, Inc, we serve the heating and cooling needs of customers throughout Rockland County, NY as well as Bergen County, NJ and surrounding communities.
